On the sides of the creek, where waters are calmer,
butterflies are dancing.
There
are shadows of Gerris lacustris, commonly known as the common pond skater or common water
strider.
Water striders rely on surface tension to walk on top of water. As many pollutants
generally lower the surface tension of water, water striders are effective bioindicators as they move
without any problem on prinstine waters like our creek.
Looking closely we can see pairs. Males that are allowed
to mate stay attached to the same female for the entire reproductive season.
They hunt on or below water surface for insects and other
small invertebrates.
