Petit rhinocéros volant

Comme le petit Adela australis que nous avons déjà rencontré, l'Œcophore nervurée (Alabonia geoffrella) est un tout petit papillon de jour d'une envergure d'environ 2 cm.

Avec son cousin A. staintoniella (qui n’a pas le bord des ailes noires notamment), il est très facile à différentier des autres petits papillons grâce aux décorations sur ses ailes et ses très longs palpes labiaux noirs à pointe blanche recourbés vers l’arrière en forme de corne de rhinocéros.

L'imago vole le jour en mai-juin. Cette espèce européenne vit dans les régions boisées et de marais. La chenille dans le bois vermoulu notamment dans celui du noisetier (Corylus avellana) et de la ronce à mûres, tous deux très communs ici.

Like the Adela australis we already met, Alabonia geoffrella is a small colorfull day-flying moth with a delicate metallic-blue pattern (around 2 cm). With the other Albonia (A. staintoniella which lacks the dark lines in the terminal part of the wings.) it is easy to distinguish from other moths with its labial palps which are conspicuously enlarged and curbed like rhinoceros horns.

The adults fly from May to June depending on the location in Europe, where it is not rare in many woodlands and marshlands.

The caterpillars feed on rotting wood; mostly living under tree bark of common hazel (Corylus avellana) and blackberries, many are here around.
