Andy Warhol en brocante

Parmi les nombreuses brocantes estivales de la région, je ne manque généralement pas trois d’entre-elles : celle de Soual fin juillet où je vends des livres afin de désengorger un peu mes bibliothèques et d’échanger avec d’autres passionnés de lecture, celle de Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux début août et celle de Sorèze fin août.

Cette année du fait de l’accueil de vacanciers au gite et de mes enfants à ces dates, je ne suis pas allée aux deux premières, je me suis donc bien rattrapée samedi dernier en furetant dans les rues ensoleillées et fleuries de Sorèze. J’y ai vu de beaux objets que je vous propose à la mode Warhol, après solarisation des photos.

Ces gants de boxe rouge écarlate étincelaient au soleil. Ils étaient en vente à l’étalage d’un monsieur qui proposait aussi d’intéressants livres où j’ai trouvé les 4 tomes du Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène écrit par son compagnon d’exil, Las Cases, un enfant du pays né à quelques kilomètres à peine de Sorèze. J’ai déjà lu "le Mémorial" mais je l’offrirai à quelque ami passionné d’histoire. Il avait aussi un intéressant Dictionnaire étymologique de botanique qui me sera bien utile.

Devant le Musée Dom Robert, on pouvait voir de beaux outils anciens et de belles pièces comme des chenets « dauphins », des verres en cristal et une malle au trésor.

Plus loin, une ancienne mobylette solex attendait sagement son propriétaire en train de se rafraîchir au bar, et rappelait de bien bons souvenirs à tous les séniors de passage.

 

Une dame avait une belle collection de boules et de statues en verre, ainsi que  de beaux vases en cristal étincelant sous les rayons du soleil qui arrivaient à percer le feuillage de la longue allée d’arbres qui ombrage le village.

 

Trois petits masques africains voisinaient avec quelques habits à essayer.

 

Tout cela et bien d’autres choses. De quoi intéresser et amuser petits et grands, comme il se doit, dans une brocante d’été.

Violon d'Ingres

 

Mon premier violon d’Ingres est d’aller chercher des livres d’occasion et d’en vendre parfois dans des brocantes et vide greniers des villages environnants. Cela tombe bien la saison va recommencer. 

Quel bonheur de discuter avec d’autres rats de bibliothèques, d’échanger références et impressions de lecture. De trouver ou de voir partir un livre qui va donner un nouveau bon moment de plaisir à quelqu’un. J'aime tout particulièrement les livres jeunesse anciens et leurs belles illustrations à redécouvrir avec les enfants.

Mon deuxième violon d’Ingres est de faire souvent et partout des photos. J’aime donc, dans ces mêmes brocantes, trouver des objets insolites ou tout simplement beaux comme ces magnifiques violons sculptés posés sur la table d’un réparateur d’instruments de musique à la brocante d’un village voisin, l’été dernier.

A ce propos savez-vous d’où vient l’expression « violon d’Ingres » ?

Elle désigne une activité à laquelle on aime se consacrer en dehors de sa profession. Ingres, peintre réputé, aimait pratiquer la musique à ses heures libres. Plutôt bien d’ailleurs puisqu’il devint deuxième violon à l’orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse.

Au début du XXe siècle, l’expression s’employait alors pour désigner exclusivement une passion musicale. Peu à peu la métaphore s’utilise plus largement à propos d’une personne qui pratique une activité non professionnelle avec une certaine passion.

Quant à la passion primaire de Ingres, la peinture, elle peut être admirée au Louvre et surtout au Musée Ingres de Montauban d’où il était originaire. Et à côté de ce Musée vous trouverez celui des sciences naturelles où se trouvent de merveilleuses collections naturalistes dont celles de mon oncle Alain, dont elles furent plus qu’un « violon d’Ingres » toute sa vie.

Ce n'est pas de l'Hebreu ni du Chinois ou du Grec, c'est du Russe

Une petite merveille trouvée à la brocante de Sorèze que je ne manque jamais au mois d’août : un adorable livre pour enfants où l’on rencontre un écureuil qui trie ses noisettes, un renard qui peigne sa queue, un poisson dentiste, un lapin qui fait des conserves, une taupe qui conduit une pelle mécanique… et tant d’autres.

Seulement voilà, il est en russe ! Donc pour moi, le texte c’est de l’hébreu, ou du chinois, ou du grec ! Le livre est daté de 1975, mais avec l’alphabet cyrillique, je ne peux même pas lire le nom de l’auteur et du talentueux illustrateur.

Quand mes deux enfants étaient petits, je leur lisais un livre chaque soir. C’était pour nous trois un véritable bonheur.

This is a lovely children book I found in a flea market last summer. Here a squirrel is trying to open its nuts, there a fox is combing its tail, a fish is working as a dentist, a rabbit is cooking food for winter or a mole is driving an excavator, and many more…

However, the text is in Russian, so a bit cryptic for me. This book is dated 1975 but with the Cyrillic alphabet, I even cannot read the name of the author and of this talented illustrator.

Long time ago I used to read a book to my young sons every evening. It remains among the most lovely times we spent together.  

Ce qui ne tue pas rend plus fort

Cette phrase de Nietzsche s’applique peut-être à cette étonnante bouteille de thériaque vue dans la superbe brocante de Sorèze en août dernier. Je n’ai pas testé.

La thériaque, appelée θηριακή (thēriakē) par les Grecs de θηρίον (thērion), "animal sauvage, bête" est un célèbre contrepoison rapporté à Rome par Pompée, puis complété par Andromaque, médecin de Néron. La recette comprend un mélange de plus de cinquante drogues, plantes et autres ingrédients, dont la vipère.

Le vin de serpent est encore une boisson alcoolisée dans laquelle on fait macérer un ensemble de serpents venimeux placés dans la bouteille. On le trouve au Vietnam et en Asie du Sud. Les serpents y sont largement considérés comme possédants des qualités médicinales. Toutefois leur venin dissous dans la liqueur est dénaturé par l'éthanol. Il est illégal d'importer de l'alcool de serpent dans de nombreux pays car des serpents utilisés sont des espèces en voie de disparition.

Laissons ces breuvages aux plus courageux, comme l'était toute l’équipe des bronzés :

Nietzsche wrote “That which does not kill us makes us stronger ». This may be true for this theriac old bottle I saw in the fleamarket of the nearby city of Sorèze. I did not check.

The word theriac comes from the Greek term θηριακή (thēriakē), from θηρίον (thērion), "wild animal, beast". It was a medical concoction originally formulated by the Greeks in the 1st century AD and widely adopted in the ancient world as far away as Persia, China and India via the trading links of the Silk Route. Made of more than fifty drugs, plants other ingredients including viper, it was an alexipharmic, or antidote, considered a panacea.  

Snake wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by infusing whole snakes in rice wine or grain alcohol. The drink was first recorded to have been consumed in China during the Western Zhou dynasty (ca. 1040–770 BC) and considered an important curative and believed to reinvigorate a person according to Traditional Chinese medicine. It can be found in China, Goa (India), Vietnam, and throughout Southeast Asia.

The snakes, preferably venomous ones, are not usually preserved for their meat but to have their "essence" and snake venom dissolved in the liquor. The snake venom poses no threat to the drinker. It is denatured by the ethanol and would be denatured by stomach acid anyway.

Trade of these products is limited as many of the snakes are in danger species.

My granny art deco

Walking around in the flea market in the streets of Lempaut, a nearby small village, I found this uncommon and funny stuffed billygoat among books, pans, and unknown old tools. But I did not find any “treasure” to bring back this time. 

Some years ago, I bought for next to nothing two coffee and cream jars with the sugar pot to be put together with the remaining cups from my grand mother's wedding porcelain set, with pink roses. She married my grand father in 1933, in the middle of the Art deco period.

 

My other grand mother had a similar set with blue roses. 

You may ask what the use of this would be since we have Senseo type coffee machines now. It has none, except the most valuable to me: every time I see it, I remember my beloved granny, called… Rose.

Pans, clowns and deer...

Every first Sunday of August, the flea market in the nearby small city of Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux that I never miss.

As every year, colourful old tin pans are leaving their attic just for you. 

Toys like these clowns are ready for adoption.

 

And among cups and glasses, a deer is smiling too when looking at you.

Bunny is waiting for playing again with Baby

The new season of local flea markets is currently starting again offering new treasure hunting to those who like them.

From the first one in Verdalle, I came back some days ago with a funny wooden old toy which red part in the bottom was damaged, probably by water.

After sanding it and putting a new coat of red lacquer, it is ready again to play with Baby.

Please have a seat and play

I found in the attic of our farm an old piano stool. After treatment against wood parasites, new painting and replacing the old material, it is ready for use again.

For this type of work you need some patience to put out all the nails and put new ones. You will need also a small hammer.

The coming winter, I plan to do an armchair.

Missing pieces of the puzzle

I found in a flea market in Belgium a tray made of african wood with ivory incrustations. I got it for a good price due to some pieces missing.

 

 
With horn from those funny birds made of it you will certainly see on flea markets too, my personal handyman (= husband) made the missing pieces and replaced them. That's it:

 

 

Schmilblick (1)

Long time ago, the French TV presented a game called “Schmilblick”: a picture of a strange object that had to be recognized by the players. This word entered the French vocabulary to name something difficult to recognize.

You can see many schmilblicks in flea markets. Here is one.

Have you any idea of what is this?

Just to help you, it was used by business men travelling and sleeping in hotels.

It is now ready for use again after sanding, treatment against wood parasites, application of walnut stain and varnish.

To continue with the list of renovations, before & after, here is a small chest made of wood, with the so called Spanish style. I got it for free at a flea market in Waterloo close to Brussels. It was broken and the owner wanted to get rid of it. My husband began by fixing a missing and broken plank on the top. Then I had to do something for the blemishes.
 

 

I used some walnut stain to colour the blemishes and then applied two coats of varnish. The chest is now back in business and used to store the shoes in our entrance hall.

 

 

Well, in the meantime it has been used as well by our two puppies and their nice new teeth. The coffer needs a new renovation!

Back into business

For many reasons I like flea markets. My mother taught me that every object has it's story to tell, even if many are no more useful. With some patience and a bit of luck, you can find a small treasure in every flea market. In addition I hate waste and like restoration of broken objects in order to use them back, for their initial purpose or for something else.

To begin with an example, here is a nice couple of brushes in olive wood I found in Saint-Paul Cap de Joux, a famous flea market between the cities of Castres and Lavaur.

As you can see in the before & after pictures, after cleaning them and with a drop of olive oil these two brushes are good as new. I do not intend to change the cat’s moustaches and straighten them. He is funnier like this.
